Black Wall Street was the name given to the greenwood neighborhood of Tulsa, Oklahoma created by the influx of black Americans who moved to the area during the oil boom of the 1910s and 1920s
The community was known for its prosperity and economic success, and had a vibrant commercial district with many Black-owned businesses, including banks, grocery stores, and hotels. The area also had its own school system and a hospital that served the Black community.
However, on May 31, 1921, a race riot erupted in Tulsa, resulting in the destruction of much of the Greenwood neighborhood. White mobs attacked Black residents and businesses, burning and looting homes and stores. The violence continued for two days, and ultimately resulted in the deaths of dozens of Black residents and the displacement of thousands more.
